One of the most popular 4x4s in the UK, the Nissan Navara comes in three models, the D22, the D23 and the D40. These models have been around since 1997 and 2014 respectively, going on to become a best-seller for the Japanese manufacturer.
As with most vehicles, however, there are some common faults with the Nissan Navara - some of which you may have heard about, others that you may be unaware of. This is only natural given that 4x4s and pickups are often put under more strain than ordinary vehicles, so to help you look after your vehicles and understand any potential issues which could arise, we’ve created a list of the common faults owners have found.

Snapped Chassis Fault
Back in 2017, it was revealed that a small number of Nissan Navara owners were seeing a common fault of corrosion on the chassis rails of this pickup. The issue boils down to rust getting in and corroding the chassis, causing it to weaken, sometimes resulting in the model snapping. Nissan maintains only a very small number of D40s built between 2005 and 2008 were affected (though others maintain it’s a wider issue). The problem was not deemed to be widespread enough to recall the Nissan Navara, so you’ll be unlikely to experience this if you haven’t already, but make sure you inspect your Navara regularly for signs of rust to be on the safe side. If you have serious concerns, you can always speak to your Nissan dealership.
Transmission Cooler Fault
A fault that seems to crop up for many owners is the transmission cooler. The radiators have been known to burst internally for some owners, which means that the engine coolant then has a route into the automatic transmission. This, in turn, means you could find that you lose some function for your reverse gear and, ultimately, you’ll need to strip back the transmission to get to the bottom of it and find the fault. You should only tackle this if you know what you’re doing and you’re certain that this is the source of your problems, otherwise, consult a mechanic.
Clutch Fault
You might find that some Nissan Navara owners point to the clutch as an issue, since it’s sometimes felt that the clutch is a little small for such a big vehicle. This isn’t a fault in its own right but is pointed out by others as a source of difficulties. If you feel like your Nissan Navara needs a new clutch, we stock all the parts you need at Milner Off Road.
Chain and Crankshaft fault
While not a fault, some Navara owners find that the timing chain and crankshaft often need attention. However, this is an issue that can be taken care of with regular maintenance of your 4x4 — keep an ear out for any rattling sounds as this could mean the bolts on the tensioner are coming loose.
